My final poster design for my Art, Design, and Change class.
My poster advocates for healthy housing for all. I think that home health is extremally important and not advocated for enough. No person, regardless of income, should have to live with mold, pests, or other household hazards. Landlords and inspectors should hold living spaces to the highest standards. Apartment complexes are often not given as much care and pests and molds are often regarded as nonissues. The presence of mold and pests can severely impact mental and physical health of people living in these conditions. I came up with the idea after discussing social issues with a group of my classmates. I wanted to focus on an issue that often effected college age students as I really wanted for my project to relate to my classmates, which made me think of student housing. Student housing is not often the most healthiest housing and that partially relates to it being apartment living. Mold and pest are not only common in student housing, but also apartment complexes. For my piece, I decided to specifically illustrate a kitchen. Most household pest gravitate toward the kitchen and mold can often flourish in damp conditions around sinks. Pest and mold found in kitchens can easily contaminate food, which can easily cause not only food waste, but food anxiety as well. This disproportionately effects less wealthy homes, as they often cannot afford to replace food. Mold can also easily cause health issues especially in people with environmental allergies or with asthma. Mold in walls and behind cupboards can easily go unnoticed and cause lasting health issues. Landlords have the responsibility to make sure properties are safe. Everyone should advocate for their health and their home, but it is not always easy to stand up for yourself. I think that programs such as HUD's Healthy Homes Program can give many people the voice and resources they need to advocate for healthier living conditions. As such, I wanted to make sure it was a part of my poster's message.
